The Chinese team iG had their visa application rejected and will not be able to travel to the World Championship. The replacement will be Team Alternate.
The German team placed 13th in the Intel Extreme Masters Season 2011/12 ranking, one rank short of qualifying for Hanover. Now the current German ESL Pro Series champion will have their chance against the best teams in the world from the 6-10th of March in Hanover.
Explanation why ALTERNATE is a head of Against All Authority
The reason why ALTERNATE has been ranked above the French team Against All Authority and subsequently was first in line to replace iG is based on the tie-breaker rules that apply in such a case:
If two or more teams have the same amount of points, there is a ranking for the different Global Challenge events that comes into play. This ranking is based on all the points that all the teams at a certain event collected throughout the season.
For this case it means that the teams who participated in the Global Challenge Cologne collected 680 throughout this Intel Extreme Masters season while the teams who where present at the event in Kiev collected only 550. Therefore ALTERNATE is a head of Against All Authority in the ranking despite both teams having 15 points.
ALTERNATE will take iG's spot in Group A where prominent names such as CLG, fnatic or World Elite are awaiting them.
aAa is actually clearly one of the best LoL teams, while Alternate isn't doing much anywhere. Add to this the fact that aAa's lineup won more points than Alternate, but since they were in another structure, that structure decided to keep the points for themselves (Millenium).
So knowing that on this day both teams have the same number of points, if you needed to decide without a match between the two which team deserved the most to go face the other best teams in the world, I can't understand how you would not take aAa.
But all of these arguments shouldn't even have to come up as it is common sense that the fairest decision would be to organize a match between Alternate and aAa... I think everyone would agree to that.
Could you please explain the fact that ALTERNATE is picked instead of aAa ?
A match between the 2 teams sounds fair to me.
This is really a shame if ALTERNATE goes to Hannover instead of aAa whereas both team has 15 points.
Guys understand they dont care how many +.. it gets. Its their dession.
And i know nobody of you was there as their decided to send alternate and not aAa. They would have their reasons for it.
Jackiee so right, aAa is clearly the stronger team and has shown way more presence at the recent Esports events than Alternate. They completely deserve to take IG's place in this case. I don't get the Esl decision of picking such a team instead of aAa.

True. I think its okay to send Alternate. They are a strong Team. For this guys who forgett it they kicked Fnatic 2.times out of the Kiev quali.
wHo is Alternate ?? never see them win a tournament lolz ...
And aAa , they are not the best eu at the moment ? REALLY STRANGE
This IEm gonna be useless ,too much bad team !!
Millenium is in thanks to aAa line up, so aAa deserves the more to go to hanover...aAa could have win this..ALTERNATE will lose everything..gj esl, SMART CHOICE !
Please consider a bo3 between AT and aAa for fairness sake. While AT would deserve it too, aAa is just the better team at the moment and would promise good games.
In case both teams are tied the way Alternate and aAa are tied, the team which attented the event with the higher point value (i.e. the overall points all attending teams of that event scored during the season) is first.
IEM Cologne: 680 points
IEM Kiev. 550 points
Hence Alternate gets the spot.
Still, a bo3 between the two teams seems like a better idea.
Rules should be used to insure that the best teams, or at least the teams that deserve the most, get to go the IEM World. However the rule stated above doesn't really respect that. The value of an IEM does not depend of an individual team, but on the IEM and all the teams involved in general. Hence it is stupid to seperate two individual teams using general rankings (as same as you couldn't say Lionel Messi is better than Ronaldo just because Barcelona is better than Madrid, you need individual arguments).
The best way to distinguish two individual teams is of course a match between the two.
What I really don't get is that it's in the favor of ESL that aAa goes to the IEM since everyone would really love to see a great team like aAa vs CLG.na, TSM etc
Completely agree with Jackiee, and should be also added that all of millenium points has been won by aAa's lineup. Rules should be aiming for the best, but in this case, we all know that aAa deserves the IEM tourney and not Alternate.
And as Jackie says, I'm not interested in watching Alternate play at all, I'll just skip those games.
So please Esl, reconsider, because Rules are good, but some are meant to be bent sometimes, and this is one of those times.
I don't think that Alternat got the spot because there are a german Team.
IMHO I would prefer to see AAA at Hannover because they are without a doubt one of the best european teams atm.
BUT
ESL had setup rules for the qualifikation wich were explained in to ot.
When there is a draw and the rules say that Alternate then will be the one to favour, then it shall be so.
If AAA has earned points as Milenium, then it is their fault not to get these points. Although the same is for CLG.eu which without a doubt deserve a spot but even are not qualified due to their license problems.

Well the point system is random anyway. Because CLG.na failed to qualify for the tournament in kiev the score is lower than Cologne. However this is not factored into the whole math. It is bullshit.
AT got invited to Cologne won one game and that was it. aAa actually qualified for Kiev.
Yep ESL should take in consideration that alternate didn't even qualify for the Iem Cologne, they just got invited. So how does that place them above aAa ?
Yep, ALTERNATE got invited to Cologne, while aAa qualified for Kiev..so don't say "this is because Cologne > Kiev" !! And Millenium's points should be for aAa, not this trash team now..
U are writing aAa is better then ALTERNATE. Maybe, but where is CLG.eu. They should go to Kiev and start in Hannover. They'll win with aAa or ALTERNATE for sure. But ESL and IEM have their rules.
please consider the "Milenium-Fact" and send aAa to Hannover! It would be so sad if the best european team (according to the last few online tournaments) cant go to the global event.
Also Alternate despite beeing a good team, has no chance at winning anyways and is by far worse than AAA!
i am sad and so is every esport fan ...
At least let them play it out! u can still do it ESL, just reconsider your decision and everyone is happy!
I probably won't get an answer, but if someone from ESL sees this and has a good answer, I would love to know why you chose this rule to separate teams in case of a tie.
To me, your rule is flawed is many ways. As I said in my previous posts, it separates individual teams using general criterias which do not make sense. Both Alternate at Cologne, and aAa at Kiev didn't make it out of the group stages. If both teams had won or went to the finals, using the tournament difficulty as a criteria would make sense in a way. But here, you're judging that Alternate was at a LAN of higher level than aAa, by comparing the 8 teams that were there, despite the fact that they only played against 3 of the other 7 teams !
I could go on and on about how I find this rule particularly odd... I'll just add that this rule does not take into account many factors that I find a lot more relevant than those you are using: this rule doesn't take into account all the points aAa won but lost to Millenium, doesn't take into account the fact that Alternate didn't actually qualify for Cologne but was invited, doesn't take into account the time the points were won and the teams' actual states: Alternate won their points in 2011 and have been pretty absent from the scene since while aAa won their points just a few weeks ago at Kiev and have been winning most of their matches against other top teams.
So to put it simply: knowing that your goal is (probably) to get all the best possible teams to come to Hannover, why would you implement a rule that doesn't necessarily insure you that those great teams will be the one selected ?

Maybe we should put this to RIOT, at least to consider working with an other esport organisation than ESL in season 3.

it has been clearly stated multiple time that this rule you talk about is biased and not fair at all.
This deserve a match for qualification, or the winner of hannovre will not really be the #1 world.
